Big Brother Africa 4 (also known as Big Brother Africa: The Revolution) is the fourth season of the Big Brother Africa series. It ran for 91 days between the 6th of September and 6th of December of the year 2009. Ikponmwosa "IK" Osakioduwa replaced Kabelo "KB" Ngakane as the host of the show.

Format

Housemate Setup

There were twenty-five housemates this season and all lived in the same house. The housemates were competing for US$200 000. This season, fourteen countries participated and each provided at least one contestant to be a housemate. Twelve of the fourteen countries were returning countries. These twelve countries were Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The other two countries were new to the game. These two countries were Ethiopia and Mozambique.

Head of House

The Head of House was feature that would give one particular housemate special and unique privileges. This would especially come in handy during nominations for they were given a special privilege in terms of saving and replacing nominees. Each Head of House for the week would be determined by the Head of House challenges played on Friday. Whoever wins the Head of House challenge becomes the following week's Head of House.

Nominations

Every week, housemates were to nominate two other housemates up for eviction. The housemates who received the most nominations were then put up for eviction. From this season onwards, the Head of House must then decide which housemate to save and which housemate to replace them with or the Head of House will also face eviction. If the Head of House was also nominated, they can save themselves and put up another housemate in their place. Depending on the Head of House's decision, that list will be the housemates put up for eviction that week and Africa will then decide who stays and who goes.

Voting

This season, during some weeks, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to evict while in other weeks, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to save. If a housemate received the most votes to evict or the least votes to save from Africa, that housemate would be evicted out of the competition. During the finale week, viewers instead voted for the housemate they wanted to win and see walk away with the prize money. The votes were split into fourteen country votes with the Rest of Africa split as the fifteenth vote to split up possible ties.

Housemates

On Day 1, twelve male housemates entered the house on launch night.

Twists

A twist is an addition to the Big Brother game that makes the competition more interesting and gives different results and also contributes in changing a housemate's opinion on the game that they are playing. The following twists occurred this season:

Twins

Edward and Erastus are twin brothers and entered the house as one housemate. They played a twist where they would swap places every day. One would be in the house while the other would be in a secret room. Both of them were using the name "Edward". By Day 14 if one, two or three housemates caught them in the act, they would play as two separate housemates. However, if four or more housemates caught them in the act, they would play as one housemate. They were successful at this and played as two separate housemates. It was revealed by Big Brother that Edward and Erastus are twins.

Molotov Cocktail

The Molotov Cocktail was a twist that was introduced during the live eviction show on Day 21. It gave an evicted housemate the privilege to punish any of the housemates that were still competing in the house for a week up until the live eviction show. Should any of the housemates fail to comply with their punishment, Big Brother will severely punish them with a worse punishment for the duration of the Molotov Cocktail length. These were the Molotov cocktails thrown at the housemates:

Starting from Day 29, housemates were to compete in pairs. The pairs were chosen at random by Big Brother. If one housemate was nominated, both housemates were. If one was to be up for eviction, both were up for eviction. If one was to be evicted, both were evicted.
These were the following pairs:

  • Edward and Emma.
  • Elizabeth and Kevin.
