Format
Housemate Setup
There were fourteen housemates this season and all lived in the same house. The housemates were competing for US$200 000. Due to the strike that occurred on Day 6, Big Brother reduced the prize money to US$180 000, however, Big Brother restored the money back to US$200 000 on Day 84 following their redemption. This season, fourteen countries participated and each provided one contestant from the previous four seasons to be a housemate. All fourteen countries were returning countries. These fourteen countries were Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Head of House
The Head of House was feature that would give one particular housemate special and unique privileges. This would especially come in handy during nominations for they were given a special privilege in terms of saving and replacing nominees. Each Head of House for the week would be determined by the Head of House challenges played on Friday. Whoever wins the Head of House challenge becomes the following week's Head of House.
Nominations
Every week, housemates were to nominate two other housemates up for eviction. The housemates who received the most nominations were then put up for eviction. The Head of House must then decide which housemate to save and which housemate to replace them with or the Head of House will also face eviction. If the Head of House was also nominated, they can save themselves and put up another housemate in their place. Depending on the Head of House's decision, that list will be the housemates put up for eviction that week and Africa will then decide who stays and who goes.
Voting
This season, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to save. If a housemate received the least votes from Africa, that housemate would be evicted out of the competition. During the finale week, viewers instead voted for the housemate they wanted to win and see walk away with the prize money. The votes were split into fourteen country votes with the Rest of Africa split as the fifteenth vote to split up possible ties.
Housemates
On Day 1, fourteen housemates from past seasons entered the house on launch night.

Twists
A twist is an addition to the Big Brother game that makes the competition more interesting and gives different results and also contributes in changing a housemate's opinion on the game that they are playing. The following twists occurred this season:
Secrets
Each of the fourteen housemates entered with a secret that was worth US$1 000. Each housemate's secret was dropped with a cryptic hint for the rest of the housemates to try and discover them. If a housemate goes through their eviction without having their secret revealed, they get to keep their US$1 000. If they reveal their secret on their own, they lose their US$1 000. If another housemate discovers their secret, that housemate will take their US$1 000. These were the secrets of the housemates:

The Dagger was a twist that was introduced during the live eviction show on Day 7. It gave an evicted housemate the privilege to punish any of the housemates that were still competing in the house for a week up until the live eviction show. Should any of the housemates fail to comply with their punishment, Big Brother will severely punish them with a worse punishment for the duration of the Dagger length. The Daggers were very similar to the Molotov Cocktails in season 4. These were the Daggers thrown at the housemates:

The Barn
In this twist, evicted housemates will be living in the barn for an undisclosed amount of time. It's a simple version of the main house and barnmates will have a second chance to win the prize money. They can still nominate housemates to join them but the housemates can't nominate them because of the assumption that they're actually evicted. On Day 77, the barn officially shut down as some of the barnmates returned to the main house while others were officially evicted.
